The president’s power to pardon federal crimes is immense, with roots in ancient notions of mercy and amnesty. However, this power, seemingly boundless under the Constitution, lacks clear constraints, inviting concerns about abuse. Recent discussions in the U.S. Supreme Court have raised alarms about the potential for presidential abuse of pardons, highlighting the need for accountability within the pardon system to uphold the foundational premise that no one is above the law. Kim Wehle will present the historical context and contemporary challenges surrounding the presidential pardon as she describes in her new book, In Pardon Power: How the Pardon System Works—and Why. Wehle contends that any pardon undermining the principle of accountability before the law, including self-pardons, cannot be constitutionally justified. Urgent recognition of the necessity for guardrails around the pardon power is essential to safeguard American democracy. Kimberly Wehle (pronounced “Whale-ee”) is an expert in constitutional law and the separation of powers, with particular emphasis on presidential power and administrative agencies. She is a tenured law professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where she teaches Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Administrative law, and Federal Courts. She is also a legal contributor for ABC News and regularly writes for Politico, The Atlantic, and The Bulwark. Winner of the University of Maryland System Board of Regents Award for excellence in scholarship, she also writes and comments on the Supreme Court, election law and voting rights. She was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Washington D.C. office and Associate Independent Counsel in the Whitewater Investigation. She is author of the books, What You Need to Know about Voting—and Why, How to Read The Constitution—and Why, and How to Think Like a Lawyer—and Why: A Common-Sense Guide to Everyday Dilemmas.

Round House Theatre Play - "A HANUKKAH CAROL, or GELT TRIP! THE MUSICAL" Hilarious Holiday Musical CC@H is delighted to invite our members and volunteers to attend a showing of the world premiere of “A HANUKKAH CAROL, or GELT TRIP! THE MUSICAL" on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. Misanthropic millennial influencer Chava Kanipshin’s internet followers are turning into haters. Desperate to regain her popularity, Chava shuns anything and anyone she sees as an obstacle, including her family, friends, and holiday traditions. But on the first night of Hanukkah, Chava is visited by the ghost of deceased social media star Mimi Marley and other spirits who warn her to change her ways—or be cursed forever. The spirits lead Chava on a madcap journey through Hanukkahs past, present, and future to help her reconnect with her spirit of generosity, her Jewish identity, and an appreciation of her real-life supporters. Winner of the Audience Favorite Award at the Broadway Shark Tank, A Hanukkah Carol is a heartfelt, family-friendly riff on a holiday classic that celebrates making the world a kinder place. A Hanukkah Carol is produced by special arrangement with Daryl Roth, Jim Kierstead, and Feelin‘ Gelty. Round House Theatre is located at 4545 East-West Highway, Bethesda, MD 20814. Parking information can be found HERE. Up to 20 tickets are available on a first come first served basis for CC@H members and volunteers only. Please let us know if you require any ADA seating accommodations by Monday, November 25. RSVP by Monday, November 25 by email: info@chevychaseathome.org or phone: 301-657-3115.

Open to members and volunteers, this group meets via Zoom on the third Monday of the month at 4:00 pm (The group will meet at 4:30 pm for the months of Oct, Nov and Dec) to inspire and support our individual efforts to get rid of "stuff". We will talk about how to get started, how to work with partners who are recalcitrant, and where to donate or sell things. We can encourage each other and congratulate one another on our progress. Sharing in the process might make this task feel more like a worthwhile accomplishment than simply an odious chore.
