It has become one of the world's most popular walking holidays and spiritual journeys. For more than 1,000 years, pilgrims and adventures have made their way across Europe to visit the shrine of St. James the Great, now the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, the cathedral is the epitome of Romanesque architecture in Spain and the reputed burial place of the apostle Saint James the Great.
Our engaging and entertaining speaker, Kathleen McGuinness, is a Commissioner on the Council on Aging for Montgomery County. Her 500-mile foot journey was written up in The Washington Post. She is a 3rd generation Washingtonian who, while recuperating from a fall and four fractured vertebrae, decided to set a goal of walking the Camino. One year later, she started that trek.
