James H. Barron will be speaking about his recently published book, The Greek Connection: The Life of Elias Demetracopoulos and the Untold Story of Watergate.
Drawing on a decade of research and original reporting, he tells the story of a man whose pursuit of uncomfortable truths put him at odds with the government of his native Greece and with eight U.S. presidents, from Truman through Reagan. Demetracopoulos was the target of CIA, FBI, and State Department surveillance and harassment, as well as a kidnapping plot. The Greek Connection tells about the cost of standing up for democracy and a free press, and the role of foreign money in the presidential election of 1968.
Praise for the book comes from Doris Kearns Goodwin:"... a magnificent work, a triumphant combination of exhaustive research and fine narrative writing."
Barron is a journalist, attorney, and the founding advisory board member of the New England Center for Investigative Reporting. RSVP to director@bmavillage.org for meeting link.
