In this virtual discussion, scientist Shauna Edson (Astronomy Education Program Coordinator, Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum) will talk about the history of the astronomy of Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House’s night sky and the science and the stories the sky tells us over Woodlawn's history. The discussion will cover a few important historical stops along both the timeline of events in the sky, and events on the ground over 250 years until current day. The upward view-shed is quite relevant to historic site stories, in tandem with the built, landscaped, and natural environments. The preservation of the night sky is important, so that we can better understand the intimate role of the dark sky to those people making history on the ground. This event will also commemorate the groundbreaking new NASA mission: the space launch of the Webb Telescope! Hosted by NASA and the Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House.
